Robert Mitchell
PFT Trustee
Robert Mitchell has been a PFT Executive Board member since 2005 and is currently one of two PFT Trustees. Naomi Mattarock is the other.
Mitchell began his teaching career in 1995 at West Liberty Classical Academy Middle School. When West Liberty closed in 2001 to become an elementary school, he moved to Pittsburgh Classical Academy. He taught Spanish at both schools and has coached the girls’ soccer, girls’ softball and girls’ basketball teams. In 2000, he won a $2,500 “Thanks Coach” award from PNC bank, and continues to coach both girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer at PCA.
In 2005, Mitchell won a Fulbright award and participated in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange program. He lived with his family in Piura, Peru for a year, teaching English to students in grades 1-6. A Fulbright teacher from Peru took over his classes at Pittsburgh Classical Academy during the 2005-2006 school year.
Mitchell joined the PFT on his first day of work in 1995 and became the PFT Building Representative for West Liberty shortly thereafter. He served on the Middle School Grassroots Committee at its inception and is on of three co-chairs for the Burdensome Paperwork Committee. Rob Mitchell is one of the two co-chairs of the African-American Teacher Mentorship Program. He was elected to the PFT Executive Board in 2005 as a Member at Large and in 2006 became a Middle Schools Representative as a part of the CCEU slate. He has served as a PFT representative on the RISE leadership team, Courageous Conversations workshops, and as a panelist on the NBC News Education Nation program.
Mitchell holds a B.A. in Spanish from Swarthmore College (1990). In 1994, he won an African-American Fellowship Award at the University of Pittsburgh and completed his M.A.T. in Foreign Language Education there in 1995. He currently resides in Pittsburgh’s Stanton Heights with his wife Emma and sons, Malcolm and Marcus.
