Jeremiah Dugan
PFT Secretary
Jeremiah Dugan has been a PFT Executive Board member since 2003 and is currently the PFT Secretary. His time on the executive board has been driven by the belief that the school district’s most valuable asset its high quality educators. That belief is strengthened every day when he sends his two daughters to South Brook Middle School with a hope to see them benefit from the Pittsburgh Promise.
Jeremiah began his teaching career in 1999 at Langley High School where as a first year teacher served as the Yearbook advisor and began working down the Yearbook’s ten thousand dollar debt and placed it on the path toward financial stability. After that position was cut, Jeremiah began teaching at Frick International Studies Academy, where as a non-tenured teacher began serving as a building representative. While at Frick ISA, Dugan coached softball, basketball, sponsored the ski club and debate club, and served as the president of the Faculty and Staff Association. Additionally, serving on the PFT’s Middle School Grass Roots Committee, teaching at the PFT’s ER&D Seminars and on the PFT’s Political Action Committee.
In 2007, Jeremiah was given the opportunity to transfer to South Brook Middle School, where he could walk to school, passing his parents’ and grandmother’s homes. While at South Brook Jeremiah has coached cross country, basketball, soccer, served as 8th Grade Instructional Team Leader, Social Studies Curriculum Review Committee, VIEW Committee, and TLE Liaison. Additionally, serving as a building representative, PFT’s Political Action Committee treasurer, President of the Faculty and Staff Association and on the PFT Labor Day Parade Committee.
Jeremiah’s passion for the union was fostered growing up in Brookline as the son of a proud member of Firefighters Local #1. After graduating from Brashear High School, Jeremiah attended the University of Pittsburgh. While there he interned with the AFL-CIO where he worked to organize nursing home workers in the right to work states of Mississippi and Alabama. Also, while at Pitt, Jeremiah was appointed to serve as a student representative to PSEA’s statewide Political Action Committee. After which Jeremiah was elected the state president of the 5,000 member Student PSEA and represent those college students preparing to become teachers on the PSEA Executive Board for two terms.
In 2010, Jeremiah earned his master’s in Education Leadership from Carlow University. Within the Brookline neighborhood he has coached little league and youth soccer, serving as the president of the board of directors for the South Pittsburgh Development Corporation, member of Brookline Block Watch, and volunteered at the Brookline Food Bank.
