History of the CCEU Leadership in the PFT

During the first decade of Al Fondy’s 37-year tenure as the President of the PFT (1967-2005), he organized the teachers and paraprofessionals, led three successful strikes, helped establish the public employees right to strike, and founded the Committee to Continue an Effective Union (CCEU) to ensure that the success would continue.

CCEU Mission Statement

Our mission, as members of the CCEU, is to continue the effective, visionary, and competent work of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers through the election of candidates to the Executive Board and Officer positions of our union. We are committed to advancing the economic security and professional interests of our teachers and educational employees, providing quality educational opportunities for our students, forwarding social justice and equality, and participating in local, state, and national activism and legislation to promote public education.    (Adopted at the 2012 CCEU Conference)

“No matter how professional we are or think we are or will be, since we are employed in a collective manner, we have to seek some collective means of representation. If you don’t have the power, you can’t be professional.”
—Al Fondy, PFT president, 1967 - 2005, and founder of the CCEU
